I'm Ms. Uyeno (pronounced oo-yen-OH)!
During my formative years, I was home schooled; a fact I'm proud of and know has shaped who I am as a person and as a professional educator. The basis of my education at home was holistic and incorporated elements of a classical education while using a community approach. I attended private school and public school for my high school education. I spent my first two years of college studying art and film making, earning my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. I earned my teaching credential at the beginning of 2014 and have completed my Master of Arts in Teaching. I'm passionate about learning, and love to share that passion with others. I consider myself to be a life-long learner.
For me, my family was, is and continues to be the foundation for my life. My parents met in grade school in San Jose, CA and currently live in Tennessee. I have one older brother, a sister-in-law, a niece and a nephew, who live in Colorado. My family taught and continues to teach me to be of good character. This is important to me as an educator; not only presenting academia to students but integrating character in all we do.
When not following academic pursuits, I like to read. I quote my mom a lot in the classroom; growing up she'd always say "books are our friends!". I have an innate curiosity; I ask a lot of questions and look for answers. This curious spirit was fostered by my dad who, when I asked questions growing up, would respond by saying "that's an excellent question. Look it up and tell me about it at dinner." My students catch me repeating these wise words to them inside and outside of the classroom. I enjoy traveling and immersing myself into new cultures. I have traveled, worked and lived in over 24 countries.
Creating balance in life is important to me; therefore I balance exercising my mind with exercising my body. I play and coach roller derby with the Sac City Rollers; a professional, all female flat track team. Roller derby not only provides physical exercise for me, but teaches me a lot about patience, teamwork, communication and joy; all character traits I incorporate into my classroom instruction. I deliberately refer to students as teammates to help foster a safe and collaborative environment. I work in collaboration with students and their families to achieve academic excellence. Students work together to achieve educational goals.
I look forward to teaching you and learning from you!

Teaching Philosophy and Behavior Expectations
I believe that all students have the capability to learn and that an effective teacher can find a way to reach every student. Students should be viewed and treated not as empty vessels waiting to be filled, but as individuals ready to exchange knowledge and contribute to their individual learning experience as well as that of others.
I believe it’s my role as an educator to create a holistic classroom; not only guiding my students towards academic knowledge but helping them to develop character and social skills to become well adjusted, creative, successful individuals. Students should value their differences and feel comfortable sharing them with others without the fear of criticism. Teachers need to use various methods in order to reach every student. As a teacher, it is my goal to teach to the multiple intelligences that I know exist in the classroom. Varying methods of teaching will create an interesting and fun environment and will help all students succeed. Just as I will vary my methods of teaching, I will also vary my methods of evaluating my students by using several modalities. Student input is important to me; I think students who feel a part of the education process will be more open to learning compared to those who have no say in their education, their teacher’s methods, or their teacher’s evaluations. I believe that we are life-long learners; the process of learning shouldn't end once we graduate school. I plan and hope to learn just as much from students as they will learn from me. Finally, I boil my classroom rules down to the three R’s: -BE RESPECTFUL: be respectful of self be respectful of others be respectful of nature -BE RESPONSIBLE: be responsible for your education be responsible for yourself be responsible with others -BE REMARKABLE: be okay with being you be passionate be okay with others having different ideas than you |
